Fort Meade Youth Activity Center

Winner of AIA DC Merit Award, this new development was designed implied to look like a combination “existing” facility that was as series of abandoned industrial buildings “found” by ‘military brats’ and converted into their ‘fort’ by covering the space-between the existing buildings with Kalwall roof and anything new, skewed at a 15 degree angle, a theme carried through in the detailing of the new contemporary structure, HVAC, lighting, and a blend of retro=lighting fixtures of the previous era. The foundations of the ‘new’ and ‘existing’ retro was the creative cartoon story line of these military youths and their find the on-base buildings and converted them by virtue of the new infill to a clubhouse.

Designed while at Cooper-Lecky Architects in Washington, DC
